Thoughts on UK Higher Education
November 4, 2010 –
The cap on the cost of higher education has just increased again in the UK. Maguire Associates welcomed colleagues from the University of Birmingham in England today to discuss this “game changer” on the other side of the pond. What a sharp team! We had a great morning brainstorming about how best practices in America can be adapted to emerging opportunities in the UK. Universities are not permitted to reach out to parents of inquirers, limiting their ability to educate families about how scholarships and need-grants will be factored into price increases. Nonetheless, our approach to assessing value and calculating net cost was of great interest for the development of internal policies. Birmingham is among the top comprehensive universities in England and is a member of the prestigious Russell Group (similar to our Ivy League). Net pricing promises to be an important element of their overall strategy for holding their competitive position. We have been invited to present strategic modeling to the Data Matters conference sponsored by UCAS in January. Stay tuned for more on this, coming soon!
