The Maguire Network Latest Net-Poll Results Summary

Our Net-Poll question in the last issue of The Maguire Network asked you to share your thoughts on the use of merit aid.  Specifically, we asked whether you agree, disagree or have no opinion with the statement:  “Colleges and universities should award merit aid to shape the incoming class, even if it means there is less money available for need-based financial aid.”   Thirty-seven percent (37%) of respondents agreed with this statement, while 46% disagreed, and 16% had no opinion.

We asked this same question of 1,478 college and university board members and 764 presidents in recent research with The Chronicle of Higher Education.  Comparison of those results reveals that your opinions are more similar to those of board members we surveyed, more often disagreeing than agreeing with this statement.  Interestingly, we found that presidents are more likely than trustees to favor the use of merit aid in shaping incoming classes.
